A New Minor at Mary Baldwin: Public History
Making History
In 2005, Mary Baldwin College collaborated with the Woodrow Wilson
Presidential Library to establish an undergraduate minor in public
history. Designed to create working historians, this program trains
students for careers in the field of public history by combining an
academic degree at an accredited liberal arts college with hands-on
experience.
Where It Can Take You
Through coursework and internships, this Minor prepares students for
professional careers in museums, archives, historic sites, preservation,
and government agencies such as the National Park Service and the National
Archives and Records Administration. Public historians also work as
consultants, write commissioned histories, develop websites, and research
and direct film, radio, and TV productions.
Why Now?
The minor in public history addresses an expanding market in business,
presidential libraries, museums, and historical organizations in the
United States. To share history with a mass audience, practitioners
of public history need the kind of professional training in historical
research, theory, and practice that this minor offers. Academic coursework
teamed with a hands-on internship provides students with a marketable,
in-demand skill.
