Honor Societies and AwardsA. S. Sullivan AwardAlpha Lambda DeltaAlpha Lambda Delta is a national society that honors academic excellence during a student's first year in college. Requirements for membership are a cumulative average of 3.5 or higher during the freshman year and inclusion in the top 20 percent of the class. The society annually honors the graduating Senior member with the highest GPA by presenting her with the Senior Book Award. Alpha Sigma LambdaAlpha Sigma Lambda is a national honor society that strives to provide stimulating impetus to highly motivated adult students in continuing higher education during their academic careers. The society recognizes the special achievements of adults who accomplish academic excellence while facing competing interests of home and work. The Alpha Delta Pi chapter at Mary Baldwin College was chartered in 2001. Adult Degree Program graduates with a GPA of 3.5 or higher will be invited to join during the spring before graduation. Beta Beta BetaBeta Beta Beta is a national honor society for students in the biological sciences. Its activities are designed to stimulate interest, scholarly attainment, and investigation in the biological sciences. The Alpha Pi Chapter at MBC seeks to encourage scholarly achievement in biology by electing to active membership students who show special aptitude and interest in the life sciences. Biology majors, minors or students in the medical technology program are eligible for consideration provided they are in good academic standing and have completed three semester courses in biological science at MBC with an average grade of B. The organization sponsors two or three programs each year for the college community. Iota Sigma PiIota Sigma Pi is a national honor society for women in chemistry that seeks to promote interest in chemistry among women. The Argentum Chapter, installed in 1979, is a metropolitan chapter and includes members from other colleges, schools, and industries located in the Shenandoah Valley. Membership requirements are four semesters of chemistry with a 3.5 GPA in chemistry and overall or six semesters of chemistry with a 3.0 GPA in chemistry and overall. Kappa Delta PiKappa Delta Pi is an international honor society in education that is dedicated to scholarship and excellence in education. The Alpha Gamma Delta Chapter at MBC encourages members to take active roles in promoting worthy educational ideas and practices. GPA requirements for membership are a 3.5 for undergraduates and a 3.8 for graduate students. Induction ceremonies are held in spring. More information can be found at http://www.mbc.edu/kdp/. Lambda Pi EtaThe Mary Baldwin chapter of Lambda Pi Eta -- the national honor society in communication studies -- is affiliated with the National Communication Association (NCA). It recognizes outstanding student achievement in communication scholarship and promotes professional development among communication majors. The requirements for induction include a 3.0 cumulative GPA with 60 semester credit hours completed in accordance with a 3.25 GPA for communication courses with 12 semester credit hours completed. More information can be found at NCA. Omicron Delta EpsilonOmicron Delta Epsilon is the international honor society for economics. Membership requirements include: junior or senior standing, completing 14 semester hours of courses in economics and achieving at least a 3.0 GPA in economics and overall. Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society, recognizes
and encourages leadership in the following five areas of college
life: Phi Alpha ThetaPhi Alpha Theta is a national honor society that recognizes those who excel in the field of history. To be elected to Phi Alpha Theta, students need an overall GPA of 3.1 in the field of history. Also, they must have completed at least four courses in history. The organization sponsors meetings, conferences, and guest speakers. Phi Beta KappaPsi ChiThe Mary Baldwin Chapter of Psi Chi is the national honor society in psychology. The purpose of the society is to encourage, stimulate, and maintain scholarship in the science of psychology. Membership is by invitation. Students become eligible during their junior and senior years, and must rank in the top 35 percent of their class, having completed at least eight s.h. in psychology and at least two courses from among Psychology 210, 211, 220, 310, 320, and 400. At least two of their psychology courses also must have been taken from MBC professors, and their average GPA in psychology must be 3.2 or above. Sigma Tau DeltaSigma Tau Delta is an international honor society which recognizes excellence in the field of English. The Mary Baldwin chapter was founded in 1989. To be eligible, a student must rank in the top 35 percent of her class with a B average in English courses. Invitations are extended to both majors and minors. A student must be in the second semester of her sophomore year to become a member. |
