Desmodium nudiflorum

Naked-flowered Tick Trefoil

Names and Myths

Desmodium Greek desmos denotes a chain, descriptive of linear arrangement of seedpods. nudiflorum no leaves on the floral stalk9

Natural history / Folklore

Endemic to the new world, two dozen species are found east of the rockies.17

The seeds are covered with a seed coat that clings to passing mammals. The three parted seed pod is called a loment, and as the seeds mature the floral stalk droops bringing these hitchhikers across the paths of forest dwelling mammals. A few species of birds and mammals eat the seeds.9
