Natural history / Folklore

Indians used it as a medicine to cure jopi (typhoid). Typhoid weed morphed to Joe Pye weed.22  Another tale was that Joe Pye was an Indian who sold herbs to Northeasterners in early colonial times. He used his weed for the treatment of typhoid fever, plant makes people sweat, must have had some merit for it still bears his name.6


July –September Pink to purple flowers leaves in whorls of 4-7 and from 4 to 8 ft in height. Moist woods and marshes.5
