The purpose of The Honors Program at Mary Baldwin
College is to recognize excellence and to offer special opportunities
for students of exceptional ability. It is designed to provide helpful
direction in a student's academic career as well as encourage students
to develop in an independent and creative manner.
Who are Bailey Honor Scholars?
Students who enter The Honors Program as freshmen
are known as Bailey Scholars. Bailey Scholars are selected on the basis
of SAT/ACT scores, academic course history and grade point average.
Candidates must also submit a written application by February 25 and
successfully interview with a faculty member of the College. To apply
as a Bailey Scholar, one must have at least a 1200/27 on the SAT/ACT
and 3.5 cumulative GPA. If one does not enter the program as a freshman,
it is possible to enter as an upper classman after completing at least
24 semester hours with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.

- Greater Flexibility in Changing a Pass/No Credit Course to a Graded
Course
- Recognition at Honors Convocation and other College-Wide Forums
- Advice from Faculty on Applying for National Scholarships and Fellowships
- Participation in the Virginia Collegiate Honors Council
What are the Requirements of an Honor Scholar?
To remain in The Honors Program, a student is expected
to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher (3.25 for freshmen),
and demonstrate progress toward an Honors Degree. Honors Degree candidates
are required to complete at least one natural science lab course and
at least one year of a foreign language, earn nine hours of "Honors" credit,
and complete a Senior Honors Project.
