Who is a Residential College for Women
(RCW) Student?
A RCW student is a young woman who enters college immediately
after graduating from high school. These guidelines also apply to
traditional age students who enter the VWIL and, to a limited degree,
those young women between 13 and 16 years old who enter the PEG.
Eligibility for College Assistance
All applying freshmen and transfer students are automatically considered
for merit scholarships and grants. High school or college cumulative
Grade Point Average (GPA) and test scores are used by the Admissions
Office to determine who is eligible for merit scholarships. Generally,
in order to be considered for financial aid based on need, a student
must complete the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), available online
at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Soon after the federal government processes
a student's FAFSA, the MBC Financial Aid Office will notify the student
of her eligibility. Students must reapply for need-based and federal
aid each year they are enrolled. If a family's economic situation
remains constant over the four years of a student's enrollment, every
effort will be made to see that the amount of her overall aid package
remains constant, although the balance between loans and grants will
change.
International Students
College-funded need-based financial assistance is restricted to
United States citizens or non-citizens eligible for federal programs.
All international students must be prepared to meet the costs of
education and living expenses while in this country with personal
or family funds, although some might qualify for merit scholarships
awarded by the Admissions Office. The College cannot issue the Certificate
of Eligibility (Form I-20) unless it has satisfactory evidence that
the international student will have adequate financial resources.
Work-study Jobs on Campus
Jobs are primarily available on a need basis; however, some students
with specialized qualifications may be able to locate non-need employment
through the Coordinator of Student Jobs. See Jobs
on Campus.
Loans for Students and Parents
Stafford loans are available for any student who files the FAFSA
to show eligibility. Parents can apply for the Parent Loan for Undergraduate
Student (PLUS). For details on these loan programs see Loans.
Satisfactory Academic Progress
Students must maintain satisfactory academic progress for continued eligibility for
financial aid.
Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded to RCW students upon acceptance
by the Admissions Office.
Financial Aid for Study Abroad
Students are encouraged to experience travel through study abroad
classes. Financial aid is available on a limited basis for study abroad opportunities.
Tuition Assistance Grant for Virginia Residents
All Virginia residents who are full-time students may be eligible
for the Tuition Assistance Grant (TAG) from the State of Virginia.
Virginia residents in the VWIL program receive a grant from the State
of Virginia but are not eligible for both the VWIL Grant and the
TAG. The estimate for the TAG for 2007-08 academic year is $3,000.
VWIL students are eligible to receive all financial aid that is
available to Mary Baldwin College students. Residents of the Commonwealth
of Virginia, however, receive the VWIL grant from the Commonwealth
in lieu of the TAG grant. That grant is estimated at $7,464 for 2007-08.
Applicants to the VWIL program who are interested in receiving a
commission in one of the services may also apply for ROTC scholarships.
