Academic Support Services

Most international students are nervous about taking classes in English. They are afraid that they won't be able to understand their professors, and that they won't be able to write well in English. Students coming to Mary Baldwin College do not need to worry, because we have many places where they can get extra help.

Writing Center

The Writing Center is open day and night and is manned by students who are trained to help other students with their writing. They won't write your paper for you, but they will help you to organize and clarify your thoughts and can point out the weaknesses in your paper. International students love the Writing Center, because they feel more confident that they are on the right track with their writing.

The Sena Center for Student Life and Career Development

The Sena Center is another wonderful resource for international students. The Center offers many workshops on how to take notes in class, how to write essay exams and research papers, how to study for exams, and how to read textbooks with more understanding. The Sena Center is also a career guidance center. A student can attend workshops on interviewing for jobs, and writing resumes and then can get assistance in locating internships and jobs. If you are interested in going on to Graduate school, the Center provides information on taking Graduate school entrance exams and has catalogues about the many Graduate school programs in the U.S.

Learning Skills Center

The Learning Skills Center is the place to go if you need one-on-one help from a tutor. The Center provides Math and Computer tutors and can link students to tutors in other subject areas.

And of course there are the professors! MBC teachers encourage students to talk with them in their offices if they are experiencing difficulties with their classes. So, if you are motivated and willing to work, there is no reason why you can't succeed at MBC.
