Alison KaufmannAlison Kaufmann '07:

Energy conservation specialist at Dominion Virginia Power, and electric company based in Richmond, VA

“I communicate to customers the benefits of energy conservation and how they can conserve in their homes and businesses.” One of Kaufmann’s responsibilities is contributing to Dominion’s Energy Conservation blog (econserve.blogspot.com), where she has written about SmartGrid technology, eco fairs, and energy conservation on campuses, such as MBC’s Turn It Off! campaign, among other topics.

“I am passionate about working toward, and communicating to others, the benefits of a clean energy future and how we can realistically meet that goal. I can make a difference in the way our customers — people in my community — use electricity, which impacts the bottom line on their bill. Energy conservation continues to be a hot topic. Demand for energy keeps growing, regardless of the recession. To meet demand, we (utility providers) can offer energy conservation programs and clean energy generation sources.”

Kaufmann learned what it meant to be a volunteer leader while serving in student government and as an orientation leader at MBC. “I saw the change one person’s idea or efforts can make. Now, I see the difference a Fortune 500 company can make in its community by offering solutions and listening to the concerns of its customers.”

During the summer, Kaufmann helped develop a marketing campaign to entice customers to sign up for Dominion’s upcoming energy-saving programs. “Customers can conserve energy in their home by learning how to use energy efficiently and by partnering with their utility company. We have proposed that the company offer customers incentives for signing up to use a suite of energy-saving programs.”
