Since she was a young girl, Ann Gordon Evans has contributed to her community. Inspired by her parents — her mother a charter member of The Junior League of Hampton Roads and her father a devoted Rotarian — Evans began volunteering in her local hospital as a teenager. While she was a middleschool algebra teacher, she also found time to give back.

“I have tried over the years to act as an example to others for community service. I enjoy organizing people to get the job done,” Evans said. “I love working with people and am most gratified when they become involved in some aspect of community service.”

Like her mother, at age 22, Evans joined the Junior League of Hampton Roads. She has served as president of that organization and is now a sustaining member. She is also on the board of directors and serves as second vice president of the Garden Club of Virginia, a state organization focused on conservation of natural resources, preservation of historic landscapes, and education of its members as well as the general public.

In Staunton, the Garden Club has worked to preserve the gardens at Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library.

Evans also serves her alma mater well. For 14 years, she volunteered on the Parents Council and was on the Alumnae/i Association’s Board of Directors for 10 years.

“I enjoyed the leadership aspect of the work during those years, but more important was the opportunity to work with MBC students,” she said. “[As a student] the college offered the opportunity for me to develop leadership skills to be used in any endeavor in the community.”
