A Changemaker is ... Felicia Byrd '11Byrd worked diligently all summer in the Office of Residence Life as a volunteer peer educator, but her title and responsibilities changed noticeably when she stepped into her changemaker role as planning and logistics peer educator for student events in fall 2009.
… a professional: Before she landed the job, Byrd had to revise her credentials and learn new job-hunting skills. “I had never written a cover letter in my life, and I had to update my resumé,” she said, admitting that the process took her about a week with the help of the Office of Career Development’s resources. “I was recommended for the position early on, so I feel like I got a head start. The application process was new to me, but it was a great experience.”
… engaged: Although Byrd — who also boasts membership in MBC’s fundraising group Spencer Society Select — is no stranger to campus engagement, she is preparing for a transition into an increasingly intense job. “There is much more emphasis on planning and more responsibility with event participation on campus,” said the junior. Working closely with Lynn Gilliland ’80, director of first and second year experience, and Melinda Brown, director of student events, Byrd plans to contribute to campus events by honing her public relations skills. “I will be working to bring more student attention and attendance to events on campus,” she said.
… a leader: The work experience as a changemaker intern isn’t the only thing Byrd is excited about; she also relishes the chance to be a leader on campus. “Having these new responsibilities gets you more involved, which changes your college experience,” she explained. “I feel that (these internships) have given MBC a boost. Some of the positions were available before, but with the addition of professional titles, criteria, and duties, they are getting students more involved and making them more excited to be here.”
