A Signature Program: The Virginia Women’s Institute for Leadership

The Virginia Women’s Institute for Leadership is the nation’s premier leadership program for young women. Out of a freshman class of 300, up to 50 are selected to take part in this signature program within Mary Baldwin’s Residential College for Women. (A separate application is required.) VWIL incorporates academic requirements, physical training, military leadership training, broad-based leadership development, and an exciting co-curriculum. It gives you the confidence, camaraderie, discipline, and sense of purpose that contribute to your success in college and long after.

Before their first academic year at Mary Baldwin even begins, cadets begin building enduring bonds. At Wilderness Orientation you camp, backpack, rock climb, and guide each other through teamwork activities, establishing a collective commitment to making a difference as capable, ethical leaders.

Want to be a nULL?

The newest members of VWIL begin cadet life as nULLs - the 'n' is always written lowercase to symbolize the need to start from zero/nothing. nULLs need to prove themselves as followers before becoming leaders. They must demonstrate unity and teamwork, conquer the wilderness, and know the traditions of the corps before becoming full-fledged cadets. This rite of passage is one that each VWIL cadet takes to heart, knowing that it means she will stand shoulder to shoulder with her sister even when separated.

How will you benefit?

VWIL provides you with a comprehensive education that maximizes your effectiveness and influence, regardless of your career goals. The program emphasizes team-building and cooperative challenge. You benefit from ROTC training but have no obligation to enter the military. You complete a minor in leadership studies, which employers will value. You become part of a powerful network of women committed to each other’s success. As a confident leader and VWIL graduate, you will be ready to assume responsible roles in a variety of occupational fields.

Program History

Over a decade ago, the faculty and staff of Mary Baldwin College envisioned a new program of study based on academic excellence, brilliant leadership opportunities, rigorous physical development, and a commitment to service. They named it The Virginia Women's Institute for Leadership, honoring the public/private partnership with the Commonwealth of Virginia that continues to support the program and its students. As the only all-female corps of cadets in the nation, VWIL is truly elite.
The first class entered in 1995 and graduated in 1999. Since then, 154 women have graduated and are building lives that have exceeded all expectations. Sherri Sharpe, a 1999 graduate, is now a helicopter pilot for the Army and commands the Clydesdales, the Chinook helicopter company in Iraq. Featured on NBC's Today Show, she impressed viewers with her poise, confidence, and courage. Her classmate, Kristen Van Wegen, uses her leadership skills as a marketing executive in commercial radio. Another alum, Jennifer Vergne, is a lawyer in Washington DC, and Trimble Bailey '99 is completing her medical degree and will soon enter the United States Air Force. There are 150 other stories from just like these. And, 100 more, if we include the future plans of current cadets.
