Basketball vs. Methodist University
January 6, 2008
The Mary Baldwin fighting squirrels played their very first USA South basketball
game against Methodist University Saturday afternoon. In their first game back
since the holiday break, the squirrels struggled to find their rhythm throughout
the game. Christie Hamilton (Fairfield, VA) scored the first point of the game
on a free throw, but then Methodist took control of the game with a 14-4 run.
MBC was down by a score of 33-12 at the half.
The squirrels came out in the second half with more intensity as they fought
their way back into the game. The score was 39-30 with 13:41 left to play. They
cut the lead to 9 with three consecutive baskets from Jennifer Dobson (Richmond,
VA) and two from Jessica Carter (Charlottesville, VA). The Monarchs would increase
their lead to 19 two more times. The Squirrels cut the lead to 11 but could
get no closer as the final score was 70-54. Jessica Carter led the scoring for
the squirrels with 17 points on 7 of 15 from the field. Christie Hamilton had
a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Kara Hawkins grabbed 12 rebounds
and chipped in 9 points as well.
