Logo2/17 Squirrels Drop to Ferrum in Final Seconds


The Fighting Squirrels traveled to face the #4 USA South opponent Ferrum Panthers. The squirrels come off a win against the former #1 team Methodist, while Ferrum lost to current #1 CNU.

Kara HawkinsLooking to take control of the game early, the Squirrels built a 7-2 lead off 2 Christie Hamilton baskets and one from Jennifer Dobson. With 5:56 left in the half, MBC built their cushion to 13 from solid team play on both ends of the floor. Jessica Carter would hit the final basket of the half and put the Squirrels up 28-21 during the break.

The Panthers came out more tenacious in the second half, clawing their way back into the ball game with relentless pressure. MBC struggled to find the openings and Ferrum had worked back into the game and tied it at 34-all with 11:28 left. The panthers would now take the lead for the next 8 minutes. The Squirrels kept fighting and would take the lead again on 2 of, Jennifer Dobson’s, 12 free throws in the second half. The game would be tied for the 8th time at 56 with 1:13 remaining. Ferrum had a 3 point lead with 11 seconds left and the Squirrels had the ball at the far end of the floor. A Christie Hamilton pass was thrown over the top of the defense that was forced out of bounds after the timeout and gave MBC another chance. The squirrels were unable to get off a shot, making the final score 56-59 Panthers.

Jessica CarterJennifer Dobson led all scorers tonight with 20 points and had 8 boards. Jessica Carter and Christie Hamilton contributed 15 and 10 points. Kara Hawkins grabbed 13 rebounds to lead in that category. The Squirrels are on the road against CNU on Tue at 7pm.
