Team Huddle1/20/08 MBC Basketball takes on NCW Battling Bishops.
Carter looks to add to career point total.

The Fighting Squirrels were off for most of the week, since the game vs. Shenandoah
University was cancelled due to weather on Wednesday evening, and were looking to
gain another win in the USA South today against an improved NC Wesleyan squad.
The Battling Bishops entered today’s game with a 1-1 record in conference play, while
the Squirrels are 1-4 so far this season in the USA South.

Baldwin came out slow early on in the game, looking sluggish and uninspired early in the first half and down 5-15 with 12:40
to play in the first half. After a MBC timeout, the Squirrels started to get back into the game with scoring of 11 points from
#25 Christie Hamilton and 10 points from #21 Jessica Carter which included two three-pointers late in the first half, to give
MBC a 28-26 lead going into the locker room at the break.

Christie Hamilton hit her first shot and #03 Lindsay Callison hit an opening three-pointer, to give MBC a 7 point lead early in
the second half.  Wesleyan’s #55 Desiree Driver hit a jumper to make the score 35-34 with 15:34 left in the game.  The rest
of the game was a grind, with tough defense and lots of points scored in the paint and from the free-throw line. The score was
tied 43-43 with 9:00 left to play. The Squirrels had three players with 4 fouls and NCW’s Desiree Driver would foul out with
5:36 left to play. Without Driver’s inside presence the Squirrels had an easier time inside and started to get the ball to
#34 Kara Hawkins more often, allowing her to score in the paint and from the line, tying the game at 3:02 56-56.  The game
would come down to points from the free-throw line, with a minute to go the Bishops lead by 1. Kara Hawkins would hit a
jumper to give MBC a one point lead with 44 seconds left. Jessica Carter would hit 2 free-throws to give the Squirrels a 3
point lead with 14 seconds left to play. After 2 consecutive timeouts from NCW, Carter pressured the in-bounds pass and
got a steal, helping to put Lindsay Callison on the line, which would extend the Baldwin lead to 4. Another turnover from
the Bishops sealed the 66-62 win for the Fighting Squirrels.

Jessica Carter scored 27 points and was 6-8 from the line to lead all scorers and bring her career total to 1,658 points.
Kara Hawkins had another Double-Double with 12 points and 12 rebounds despite being in early foul trouble and playing with
4 fouls in the last 5 minutes.  Christie Hamilton had 17 points, 11 rebounds and 5 steals on the afternoon. The squirrels are back
in action on Wednesday 1/23/08 at home against Shenandoah University for a rescheduled game due to weather last week.
Tip-off is at 7pm.
