MBC Basketball Wins First USA South Game vs Averett!
Women's basketball was looking to stop a 6 game skid away from the squirrel's drey today
against the Averett University Cougars tonight.
The fighting squirrels jumped out to an early
9-3 lead and never looked back. Balanced scoring from 5 squirrels and 10 points from the
games leading scorer Iiesha Ricks had MBC going into the locker room with the score 30-26
The second half was a battle as both teams wanted the win. There was a 4 minute stretch when
both teams played tough defense and neither team was able to score. The Cougars cut the lead
to 2 points twice in the second half, but were unable to take the lead. The
lead was seven with 1:30
left to play. Darcie Jones hit a tough 3-pointer to cut the lead to five in the final seconds but the
squirrels held on for the win with a final score of 54-48.
Darcie Jones led the cougars with 14 points on 4-13 from 3-point range. Iiesha Ricks had a
career night, shooting .875 from the field on 7 of 8 and 3-4 from the charity stripe for 17 points.
Senior guard Jessica Carter had 12 points and found her touch from the 3-point arc on 2 of 4
for the afternoon.
Junior Christie Hamilton was 3 of 6 for 10 points and Kara Hawkins controlled
the paint with
12 rebounds and season high of 5 blocks. The squirrels will need to recover quickly
as they
take on the Captains of Christopher Newport in a conference match up on 1/13/08 at 2pm.
