The MBC Squirrels took to the hardwood again for their second game of the weekend. Last evening, MBC lost on the road against the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan, and were looking to rebound back into the winners’ column. Jessica Carter was honored at Halftime for her achievement as the school's All-Time Scoring leader.

With only 6 players available for the afternoon game, due to an injury to Kara Hawkins in yesterday’s game, the Squirrels already skimpy line-up would be tested once again. With early balanced scoring from Christie Hamilton, Jessica Carter, and today’s starter Iiesha Ricks combining for the teams first 18 points, which would be the 4th tie in the game with 11:05 left to play in the first half. The game would be tied again from a jumper by Jennifer Dobson to make the game 29-29 with 1:05 remaining, and the teams would head into the halftime with the score 30-31 in favor of the Cougars.

More tough play from both teams had the game see its 7th tie of 39-39 at 17:11 in the second half. Baldwin would go on a 7-2 run with 2 inside baskets from Jennifer Dobson, giving the Squirrels a 47-41 lead at 12:49.

JDWith the score 53-56 in favor of the Cougars, the refs made a questionable foul call, that would make for a historic event in DIII sports. For the next 4:30, the Fighting Squirrels would be forced by their circumstances, to play with only 4, yes you read that correctly, 4 players. Jessica Carter cut the lead to 6 with 4:08 left on a nice jumper. Tough, aggressive and scrappy defense caused 4 turnovers from the Cougars, and a deep three-pointer from Christie Hamilton erupted the crowd and had the Fighting Squirrels tied at 68 with :29 remaining. The Cougars Darcie Jones hit a basket to put them up by 2. The Squirrels held for the final basket….moved the ball around…but didn’t hit the final shot…dropping the game 68-70.

Christie Hamilton led all scorers with 23 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Jessica Carter added 22 points to her record. Iiesha Ricks, in foul trouble early, chipped in 10 points, while Jennifer Dobson shot 50% from the field to score 13 points, had 8 rebounds – 6 offensive, and was 5-7 from the line.

MBC is not back in action again until February 10 against Greensboro College, where the schools will participate in “Think Pink” to raise awareness for Breast Cancer. Game time is 2pm.
