1/13/08 Mary Baldwin Basketball battles against CNU
MBC faced off against the Captains of Christopher Newport today. The Fighting Squirrels
came off a win against Averett University yesterday and were looking to extend their winning
streak. The Captains entered today’s game with a 1-0 record in conference play, while the
Squirrels have played 4 games in conference and are 1-3 so far this season.
Baldwin came out and competed from the starting tip-off. #21 Jessica Carter scored her first

baskets and the first 5 points for the Squirrels giving them a 5-2 early lead. Working hard
on
defense and battling on the boards, from both teams, the score was tied at 16-all with 8:55
left
to play in the first half. The squirrels took the lead for most of the half until a three-pointer
by the
Captains #11 Chelsie Schweers gave them a 2 point lead ending the half 26-28 in favor
of CNU.
#25 Christie Hamilton scored the first basket of the second half to tie the game at 28. MBC
would
extend their lead to 5 with baskets from #34 Kara Hawkins and #12 Jennifer Dobson.
With 12:33
left to play, the Captains would again cut the lead and tie the game for the seventh
time. The eleventh
tie came with 3:51 left to play and Jessica Carter knocking down two free-
throws to tie the game at
58.
The Captains extended their lead to five points, but Jessica Carter
again cut the lead to 64-66 on
two clutch
free-throws with 28 seconds left in the game. After
a Squirrel"s time-out, the Captains
threw a long
pass to Chelsie Schweers for an easy bucket.
Kara Hawkins hit two free-throws with 4
seconds left,
but CNU would go on to win 66-70.
Jessica Carter returned to form with 30 points and 5 of 6 from the line to lead all scorers.
Kara Hawkins
had another Double-Double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Christie
Hamilton had 10 points and
Jennifer Dobson chipped in 9 points, 3 key offensive rebounds
and 3 steals on the evening. #11 Chelsie
Schweers was the leading scorer for the Captains
with 25 points, shooting 4 for 6 from three-point range.
The squirrels are back in action on Thursday 1/17/08 at home against the Shenandoah Hornets.
Tip-off is at 7pm.
