Team Looks For 3rd USA South Win! Carter Scores 30.

Mary Baldwin College looked for its third USA South victory tonight vs. Shenandoah University. The game was fast and competitive from the beginning. Shenandoah looked to run early and the Squirrels had a difficult time trying to stop the Hornets, finding themselves down 13-21 with 7:13 left to play. Jessica Carter looked to carry the team, as she hit 3 consecutive three-pointers for MBC and cut the lead to 1 with 5:25 left to play. The Squirrels had a 4 point lead near the end of the half, until #23 Katherine Flint hit a basket to put the teams in the locker rooms with the score 33-31 in favor of the Squirrels.

            The Squirrels led for the first part of the second half, extending their lead to as much as 6. This game would become a tough battle down low, as both teams fought for loose balls and rebounds. Good rebounding would allow the Hornets to gain a 7 point lead and the Squirrels battled back for 2nd chance baskets to make the score 55-57 with 1:59 left to play. The Hornets would earn a 6 point lead from the free-throw line and looked like they had sealed the victory. With 30 seconds left to play, Kara Hawkins hit a basket to make it a 4 point game. The Squirrels fouled quickly, sending SU #25 Caity Gadinski to the line. She hit 1 of 2, giving the Hornets a 5 point lead. MBC brought the ball down quickly and looked for the three-point shot. #25 Christie Hamilton looked to pass first, but took the shot and cut the lead to 2 with 6 seconds left. The Hornets had #44 Hargbol on the line with 4 seconds left and she extended the lead to 3. The Fighting Squirrels came out of the time out with a set play, #25 Christie Hamilton threw the ball the length of the court to find #34 Kara Hawkins, who found #03 Lindsay Callison for an open look. Callison took the three-pointer to tie the game, but the ball just wouldn’t fall, making the final score 60-63.

The Squirrels fall to 5-8 on the season while the Hornets improve to 5-7. Jessica Carter led the Squirrels with 30 points, getting the ball inside more and working the boards #34 Kara Hawkins has her 3rd double-double in a row with 10 points and 12 rebounds. The Squirrels are on the road this weekend for back to back games against Meredith and Peace College. Both games are at 2pm.
