Coach Stuart is entering his fifth season as head coach of the Fighting Squirrels and is very optimistic about MBC's chances of competing for a USA South Championship in 2010-11. The Fighting Squirrels ended last season one game shy of .500 in the conference after being picked to finish last in the preseason polls. The team will return everyone to its roster from last year with the exception of Senior Captain, Kara Hawkins - the all-time leading rebounder at Mary Baldwin College. Kara's leadership, scoring, and rebounding will be missed. However, Coach Stuart hopes to fill the rebounding void with several outstanding local power forward recruits. Having maintained continuity in the coaching staff and returning eleven veteran players, Coach Stuart is looking forward to finishing at the top of the USA South Athletic Conference.
Stuart graduated in 1979 from Virginia Wesleyan College, after playing two seasons for the Marlins. Stuart played his high school basketball at Robert E. Lee from 1971-74 for the local legendary coach Paul Hatcher. Stuart also played one year of basketball at Augusta Military Academy as a post graduate student.
His coaching experience spans 14 years of high school boys and girls basketball. Before coming to MBC he coached four seasons as the head boy’s varsity coach at Nelson County High School. From 1993 to 2002, Stuart was the boys and girls assistant basketball coach at Stuarts Draft High School. In his last three seasons as the girl’s varsity assistant, Coach Stuart helped guide the cougars to an impressive 53-14 record.
Coach Stuart’s philosophy is “offense wins games, but defense wins championships”. Stuart further states, “My goal is to build a solid basketball program at MBC and have the entire Augusta County and Staunton community embrace us as their college team with support much like the Robert E. Lee High School basketball program. I believe when we start winning games the people will come.”
Coach Stuart is married with seven children and lives in Nelson County.
