The Squirrels finished 5th overall for the race. Alyssa Starnes finished 4th with a 23:41 finish behind 3 Emory runners. A great day of personal records. Starnes breaks the all time 6K for MBC records by almost 2 minutes! Results
Allysa Starnes led from start to finish on the Burtner Farm/Peak View course at the EMU Invitational on Oct 3, 2009. On what many call a true cross country course known for the challenge; Aly crossed the line at 26:14, 31 seconds in front of her closest competition. Kathryn Stephens was 11th, Angela Bartolacci was 13th, Holly Breen was 16th and Rosa Moran rounded out the scoring at 19th.
Coach Spalding is pleased with the team and individual performances as they finish the first half of their races. The Squirrels next run at the Guilford Invitational on October 17th in Greensboro. This will be this year's regional course and a good test for the team.
On a rainy, hilly "real cross country day ", the Squirrels had a good showing. Down one top five runner, the Squirrels had good performances individually. Alyssa Starnes finished third with a 25:19 time. She now holds the top two all time 6K times for Mary Baldwin. Other scorers included Holly Breen with a season PR of 27:55, Kathryn Stephens with a 28:24, Rosa Moran with a 31:03 and Alex Cummings with a 31:54. Ashley Blackwell finished with a season PR of 32:50.
Mary Baldwin finished 4th behind Regionally Ranked University of Mary Washington, W&L and Catholic. With Alyssa Starnes finishing 6th, the Squirrels placed ahead of Southern Virginia, Randolph, Averett and Sweet Briar.
The Cross Country team started their season Saturday at Virginia Wesleyan University. The team came in fourth behind Lynchburg College, Virginia Wesleyan and Bridgewater. Sophomore, Alyssa Starnes was the top runner for the squirrels coming in 7th with a time of 24:46. Other scorers for Mary Baldwin included Angela Bartolacci (SR) 27: 37, Holly Breen (SR) 28:24, Rosa Moran (JR) 30:05 and Alex Cummings (FR) 30:37. It was a nice course and a good start for all of our runners, commented Coach Spalding. The team will return to action on Saturday, Sept 12th, at the Washington and Lee Invitational at 10 am in Lexington.
