“Leading the Cross Country team is a great pleasure. Runners are a special breed of athletes. I admire their dedication to goal setting, and putting in the hard work needed to accomplish their goals.  It is my goal to create a regionally ranked cross country program here at Mary Baldwin College."

Sharon Spalding returns for her third season as cross country coach.  A multi-sport athlete in high school in California, Spalding attended James Madison University.  While at JMU she was a four year starter on the Volleyball Team.  During her career she was named an all state player three times and was named to the all region team her senior year. Spalding also ran one year of Indoor Track at JMU.  At the end of her career she was named the Greater Madison Female Athlete of the Year.

Spalding coached volleyball at Mary Baldwin for ten years and led the team to the first AWCC Championship for the college.  Spalding also had a one year stint as Basketball Coach.  In recent years Spalding has directed the Physical Training program for the Virginia Women’s Institute for Leadership.  The program uses running as its main form of aerobic exercise.  While trying to keep up with the cadets, Spalding began to compete in road races and has completed the Shamrock and Charlottesville Marathons. October 25, 2009, 20 months after her first visit to chemotherapy, she completed the Marine Corps Marathon is celebration of her cancer survivorship!

Spalding received a B.S. from JMU in Physical and Health Education. She went on to earn her M.Ed. in Sports Medicine and Applied Physiology from the University of Virginia.  She holds the Exercise Specialist certification from the American College of Sports Medicine, and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.  Coach Spalding recently completed her Level 1 Coaching Certificate from USA Track and Field.

Brittany Wells

Brittany Wells is a 2008 graduate of Bridgewater College with a B.S. in Liberal Studies.  The 2009 season marks her second season as the graduate assistant coach for Mary Baldwin cross country, as she is currently pursuing her Master of Arts in Teaching. 

Wells brings a wealth of running experience to the program.  As a collegiate runner at Bridgewater she earned letters in cross country, indoor, and outdoor track and served as the Cross Country team captain for 3 years.  In cross country, Wells was a first team all-conference runner once and a two time second team all conference runner in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.  On the track at Bridgewater, Wells holds three indoor track school records in the 1,500 meters, mile, and 5,000 meters.  In outdoor track, Wells holds the 3,000 meter steeplechase school record and ranks among the top 5 in the outdoor 1,500 and 5,000 meters. 

Wells is still a very active runner having completed the Northern Central Trail Marathon in Baltimore County, Maryland and the 2009 Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
