Sophia Stone finishes 2nd at Shenandoah
KERNSTOWN, Va. - The Mary Baldwin College Cross Country team began its 2010 season at Kernstown Battlefield on Wednesday, September 1. The Fighting Squirrels finished 3rd with 62 points in the 5000 meter event. Freshman Sophia Stone finished 2nd with a time of 21:58:00, only 26 seconds behind Amy Smith of Shenandoah University. Shenandoah won the meet with 24 points while Hood finished with 46 points. Marymount also competed, but did not have a team score.
"The toughest opponent for all of the competitors was undoubtedly the heat, as temperatures stayed right around the 100 degree mark throughout the day. The temperature got as hot as a steamy 106 degrees during the race. A number of participants were unable to finish the race due to overheating, dehydration, or fainting," according to Scott Musa of Shenandoah University.
Mary Baldwin's next race will be Saturday, September 11 at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA.
