Bland CatchingSoftball Preview.

MBC’s Softball team has been practicing for weeks now in preparation of their first game on March 7th against non-conference opponent Messiah in Grantham, PA. Head Coach Christy Shelton has been with the program since it’s inception in 1999-2000 as an assistant coach and enters her 5th season as a head coach. She brings with her Scott Robertson (4th Season) , Katie Spicer and Denise Michael (Both 2nd Season), a coaching staff of vast experiences ranging from years coaching to playing the game recently here at MBC.

“Each year has been a challenge to build a program that is still pretty young,” said Shelton who has a solid mix of players to compete this season in the USA South conference as a first year member. She brings back experienced Seniors in Lacey Ogburn (P, 1B, OF), Karen Potter (2B), Rhonda Collins (C) and Jessicca Brown (C). Brown has been nationally ranked in many Katrina Jonescategories throughout her career. During the 06 season she was 79th in Batting Average, hitting .435 on the season, was 29th in RBI per game, 34th for triples, and had a slugging percentage of .766 good enough for 43rd in the nation. Christie Hamilton, a JR three sport athlete will be looked upon to contribute in the outfield and with the bat. First year players Kristina Jones, Garika Williams and Taylor Barela will be instrumental in the success of the team this season as well. Ashley Crockett, Lacey Ogburn and Amber Ralston will be called upon to keep the runs low as they throw against the competition this season. Coach Shelton has a roster of 18 this season that will all need to contribute so the season becomes a success and she has confidence in what her team can do.

MBC Softball has had a lot of success in it’s short time as a program in the NCAA. When MBC was part of the AWCC conference, the Fighting Squirrels earned two NCAA tournament bids in 2004 and 2005, giving Softball the most tournament appearances of all the programs here at MBC. Coach Shelton is looking for more success in the USA South and believes “Playing better competition should make us better.”
