3/18 MBC Softball loses two games in USA South Opener. Hamilton and Ogburn homer on the day!
The Fighting Squirrels Softball team played their season opener of the USA South. The Squirrels come off a split against Randolph College and were looking to make an early impact in the standings of the USA South. Amber Ralston, the Squirrels most consistent
pitcher thus far, started once again for the Squirrels while Katie Ruff opened up for the Panthers, who come off a 2-2 record in their own invitational tournament this past weekend, in game 1
The Squirrels found themselves down early as the Panthers pounced and got 3 runs in the 1st and 2nd inning for a 0-6 lead. The Squirrels started off hot in the bottom of the 4th with a lead-off single from Amber Ralston. Christie Hamilton, who was 2-3 on the day, worked a full count and got the pitch she wanted, driving it deep to center field for a 2 run shot. She made the game 7-2, and Karen would triple and score on a wild pitch, but the Squirrels, who while only leaving 2 batters on base, didn’t generate enough runs to win the game, dropping 12-3. Game 2
Amber Ralston of the Fighting Squirrels would hurl against Kryestyn Matherly of the Panthers. Both pitchers controlled the tempo early with solid throwing. The Panthers took the advantage in the second, when solid pitching couldn’t help a few key plays that allowed 2 runs to score. The Squirrels would keep it close as Lacey Ogburn, 2-3 in the game, stepped up and hit a solid lead-off home-run to make it a 1-2 ball game. The Panthers tacked on another three runs in the 3rd, one in the 4th and six in the 6th, to seal the game with a 1-11 win. The Squirrels will have a rest day before playing 3 straight days. Thursday’s game is against Randolph-Macon in Ashland, VA at 2:30pm. [Box2]
