3/12 MBC Softball competes vs UWM in First, Struggles in Second

The Fighting Squirrels Softball team continues to look for their first win of the season. Today’s afternoon matchup had the Squirrels facing the Eagles, with Amber Ralston and Stephanie Watkins as the starting pitchers for Game 1.

Game 1
The Eagles went to work early and got their first runner on with a bunt single and with some base stealing was in scoring position. After the first out, a routine single to advance the runner became a great play as overaggressive base running by the Eagles forced an excellent throw by Lacey Ogburn from center field that gave Kristina Jones the easy tag out at the plate to help save a run. At the middle of the first, the squirrels were down 0-3. The Eagles would score another run in the 2nd on a Fielders Choice to make the score 0-4 with the Elder Squirrels coming up to bat.

The Senior Squirrels proved you should always listen to your elders. Lacey Ogburn, who homered in her previous contest, got on base with a hit down the third base line. Our elder stateswoman, Rhonda Collins would drive in two runs on a Home Run to left-center field, and get the Squirrels back into the contest.

Garika Williams would Homer in the bottom of the 5th but it wouldn’t be enough as the Eagles added four more runs to finish the game 3-8. [Box1]

Game 2
The starting pitchers of game 2 were Ashley Crockett for the Squirrels, who would face Kirsten Rowell of the Eagles.

Ashley Crocket got off to a good start getting 3 of 4 batters out in the first. Rowell was ready for the challenge and got her first 3 batters out as well. The Eagles got on two hot hitting streaks during the game and built a 16 run lead by the middle of the 3rd. The Squirrels scored their only run when Amber Ralston got on base and was driven in by a Double from Christie Hamilton. The final score was 1-18 for the Eagles. The Squirrels face Catholic in DC on  March 15. First pitch is at 1pm.[Box2]
