3/20 Tennis Forfeits 2 Matches, lost close 5-4 vs Southern Virginia

Mary Baldwin Tennis was in action today against the Knights of Southern Virginia University. The Squirrels are looking for another win after coming off a loss against Ferrum. The Knights are currently 0-2 on the season as an NAIA opponent.

Singles
#1 Singles player Nicole Koiner continued her winning ways with a well played match against Kayela Schneider. Both players battled in the first set, with solid play on the baseline and at the net. Nicole took more control in the second set, ending the match 6-4, 6-1.

#2 Singles was different today because of an injury to Caitlin Crowe. The Squirrels players were moved up in their seeding, placing Ania Grazynska in the #2 spot. Ania worked hard and forced Cindy Trent to net to get some passing shots, but Trent was too consistent and pulled out the win 6-1, 6-3

#3 Singles between Dasha Caron of MBC and Alison Conners was filled with some long rallies that just didn’t go the squirrels way. SVU took the match 6-2, 6-0.

#4 Frances Webber played Marissa Garff. Webber stayed true to form in marathon matches, once again going three sets. Webber took the first set 6-4 but knew she had to go the distance when she dropped the second 3-6. A tie breaker was used to decide the third set with Frances winning 10-2.

#5 Singles had Gretchen Domaleski a tough match against Kate Nelson on the Upper Grandstand courts of MBC. Gretchen squeaked by the first set 6-4 and had an uphill battle in the second. Gretchen was up 6-5 but Nelson forced a tie-break. Domaleski won the mini-break and took home the victory 7-6 (7-4)

Doubles

#1 Koiner and Caron faced Schnider and Trent of the Knights. The 8 game pro-set was close, but the Squirrels took control of the final three games to close out the set 8-5.

#2 Doubles of Grazynska and Webber was an exceptionally tight set. The Squirrels were only down a break but couldn’t find it in the end, losing 6-8.

#6 Singles and #3 Doubles were forfeited due to the injury to Caitlin Crowe.

MBC lost the meet 5-4 and are back in action tomorrow against USA South opponent Meredith at 2pm in Raleigh, NC.
