VISTA Information Technology Consultant and Webmaster

Virginia Legal Aid Society, Inc. is seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic individual as an AmeriCorps VISTA* member candidate to ensure VLAS uses technology to increase awareness of and access to VLAS services by the client community and in building our capacity to assist more clients in enforcing their legal rights. This is a one year full-time position, with a likely extension of 2-3 years, located in our Lynchburg, VA office.

Responsibilities: •Research, develop and implement a strategic technology plan that assesses VLAS’ current needs and capacities with the goal of effectively incorporating new technological advances to improve advocacy efforts. •Develop trainings and tutorials to empower staff and volunteers to use new and current technology to better serve our clients. •Expand staff knowledge and usage of our case management system to streamline administrative processes. •Identify tablet best practices and useful apps to make legal services available to rural and remote low-income individuals. •Research and develop an updated website and mobile website on a user-friendly platform. •Troubleshoot any difficulties as necessary. •Other projects as identified in grant renewals

Knowledge, skills and abilities: •Demonstrate initiative and ability to function independently and as a team •Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate in non-technical terms •Must be detail-oriented and possess excellent project management skills •Ability to relate to people from a variety of socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds •Literacy in database management, web development, networking, telecommunications, and technical support •Must have own means of reliable transportation and ability to travel within the service area. •Demonstrate strong desire to help our local communities with the goal of eliminating poverty

Minimum Standards of Eligibility: •Be at least 18 years old upon entering VISTA training. There is no upper age limit. •Be U.S. citizens or have permanent resident status. •Not be listed in the National Sex Offender Registry database as having been convicted of sex-related crimes. •Be willing to submit fingerprints for a criminal history background check. •Be in a position to offer full-time service for one year without regard to regular working hours. •Be willing, to the maximum extent practicable, to live among and at the economic level of the low-income people served by VISTA projects. •Understand that VISTAs serve on a full-time basis. Therefore, VISTAs cannot hold part-time jobs, enroll in school except in limited circumstances, or be subjects of legal proceedings (civil or criminal) that may consume time needed for VISTA assignments. VISTA service cannot be used to satisfy service requirements of parole or probation.

* VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America), the domestic equivalent to the Peace Corps, is a national service program sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service.
