VISTA Volunteer/Pro Bono and Outreach Coordinator

Virginia Legal Aid Society, Inc. is seeking two highly motivated, enthusiastic individuals as AmeriCorps VISTA* member candidates to increase the number of low-income individuals VLAS is able to serve by developing a larger network of volunteers and pro bono attorneys and to improve the visibility of VLAS services within the community and the low-income population. These are one year full-time positions with a likely extension of 2-3 years, located in our Danville, VA and Suffolk, VA offices.

Responsibilities: •Research, develop and implement a comprehensive general volunteer management system that includes volunteer job descriptions, a recruitment plan and corresponding marketing materials, an internal electronic database for volunteer tracking, a training process and materials, and a volunteer manual and forms. •Develop and implement a pro bono attorney recruitment plan to increase the number of low-income individuals VLAS is able to serve. •Recruit and assist VLAS managers to train and utilize volunteers and pro bono attorneys •Expand community outreach by developing and implementing a marketing plan that increases VLAS’s visibility with low-income individuals who may benefit from our services, with our supporters and with the larger community. •Other projects as identified in grant renewals

Knowledge, skills and abilities: •Demonstrate initiative and ability to function independently and as a team •Must have excellent communication and presentation skills •Must be detail-oriented and possess excellent project management skills •Ability to relate to people from a variety of socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds •Experience in event planning, relationship development, communications, networking, and policy and process development •Must have own means of reliable transportation and ability to travel within the service area. •Demonstrate strong desire to help our local communities with the goal of eliminating poverty

AmeriCorps VISTA Benefits: •Annual stipend of $11,136, paid every two weeks via direct deposit •Health Coverage under the AmeriCorps Health Benefits Program and optional Life Insurance with Reliance Standard Insurance Company •Personal, Medical and Holiday Leave •Pre-Service and On-Site Orientation and Training •Work related travel reimbursement •Relocation Allowance and Childcare reimbursement (if eligible) •Federal student loan deferment or forbearance (if eligible) •End of Service Benefits: Choice of Education Award of $5,550 or Cash Stipend of $1,500 •Non-Competitive Eligibility for federal job hiring process

Minimum Standards of Eligibility: •Be at least 18 years old upon entering VISTA training. There is no upper age limit. •Be U.S. citizens or have permanent resident status. •Not be listed in the National Sex Offender Registry database as having been convicted of sex-related crimes. •Be willing to submit fingerprints for a criminal history background check. •Be in a position to offer full-time service for one year without regard to regular working hours. •Be willing, to the maximum extent practicable, to live among and at the economic level of the low-income people served by VISTA projects. •Understand that VISTAs serve on a full-time basis. Therefore, VISTAs cannot hold part-time jobs, enroll in school except in limited circumstances, or be subjects of legal proceedings (civil or criminal) that may consume time needed for VISTA assignments. VISTA service cannot be used to satisfy service requirements of parole or probation. * VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America), the domestic equivalent to the Peace Corps, is a national service program sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service. VISTA offers members a modest living allowance in exchange for their commitment of a year of service. VISTA volunteers build permanent infrastructure in nonprofit organizations to help them more effectively bring individuals and communities out of poverty.
