Steve GrandeSteve Grande joined the Spencer Center for Civic and Global Engagement at Mary Baldwin College in September 2008 to be the Director of Civic Engagement. Steve oversees efforts to enhance an already resilient community service-learning program, develop a civic engagement minor, initiate domestic and international community service trips, bolster campus green initiatives, and strengthen the relationship between the college and the local community. Steve has taught undergraduate and graduate courses on diversity, multiculturalism, leadership, and service-learning.

Prior to coming to Mary Baldwin, Steve was the Director of Orientation at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA and oversaw a comprehensive first-year and transfer learning experience. Steve earned his PhD in student affairs from the University of Maryland and has researched, published, and presented nationally on issues of race, racism, privilege, first-year students, Jewish college students, and service-learning. He has a master of arts degree from the University of Maryland in student affairs and a bachelor of science degree from the University of Minnesota in urban studies. Steve has yet to develop a hobby, although he loves to listen to “This American Life” on NPR and take walks with his family to his favorite coffee shop in downtown Staunton, VA.
