We are here to serve you 24/7. At Securitas, our core values are integrity, vigilance, and helpfulness. Each member of our security team is committed to translating those values into action. Our officers are certified by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. We also sustain a close working relationship with the Staunton police and fire departments and other emergency services as part of our commitment to preparedness.

As the largest provider of security officer services in the world, Securitas has operations in 30 countries worldwide with security employees numbering more than 200,000. In the United States alone, Securitas has 600 branch offices.
Securitas (which means security in Latin) is headquartered in Sweden where it was founded in 1934. The company entered the United States market with the acquisition of Pinkerton in 1999, followed by the purchases of Burns International, First Security, American Protective Services, Doyle Protection Services, Smith Security and APG Security in 2000.

Reporting a Crime or Emergency

On Campus

It is vital that you immediately report any crime or emergency — or suspicion of crime or emergency — to the Security Department. In such situations, the sooner you report an event or activity, the better it can be attended and resolved. You may report a crime or emergency in person or by telephone by dialing 0. A security officer will contact you, investigate the incident, document the information, and take appropriate action.

Off Campus

Any crime or emergency that occurs off-campus including Mary Baldwin regional centers throughout the state of Virginia, should be reported immediately to the police department in that area by calling 911.

At Your Service

You may count on these services to be provided by the Security Department on the main campus of Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia:

• Nighttime escort service (dial 0 from any campus phone or from one of the 16 security phones located throughout the campus, at least 30 minutes before you wish to leave)
• Registration of vehicles and parking enforcement
• Issuance of identification cards

Be Safe in Your Residence Hall

Residence hall entrance/exit doors are locked 24 hours a day, every day. Each residence hall is staffed with resident advisors who are trained in residence security, live in the residence and are on call 24 hours a day. Note: Residence halls are closed during holidays and vacations.
You can help assure your own safety and that of others by heeding by practicing safe behaviors:

• Lock the door when you leave your room — even if you will be gone “only a minute” — to protect yourself and your belongings.
• Keep your room key with you at all times and do not label it. A lost key is an invitation to a thief or criminal, especially if you label it.
• Never admit strangers to residence halls. If you do not know the person seeking to enter, leave the door closed and locked, and call your resident advisor or security.
• Lock your door at all times — even while you are in the room.
• Never prop open a residence hall entry/exit door for any reason. You jeopardize the safety of everyone in the residence hall if you leave a door open.
• Report safety hazards such as broken sidewalks, steps, or handrails to the Physical Plant at extension 7209 during business hours or to the switchboard after hours.
• Report any crime or emergency to the Security Department by dialing 0.

Be Safe Around Campus

A safe, secure environment does not just happen. It takes our combined efforts.
Consider all your actions and how they might impact your safety and the safety of others,
before you act. Your choices and decisions can be life-changing. Stay alert and be aware
of your surroundings.

• At night, you should walk with others. If you are alone, contact Security for an escort: Dial 0 on campus.
• If you need assistance, there are 16 security phones located throughout the campus, including those outside residence halls and in campus parking lots.
• Cars should be parked in campus lots and kept locked at all times. Valuables should be left in the trunk or otherwise concealed.
• Each year the Security Department conducts a safety meeting for freshmen in each residence hall. You should attend to discuss any questions or concerns, as well as learn how to be safe.
  

If a potential threat to security is known to exist, the college will give timely notice to the
campus community and/or MBC regional center. You may receive such notice via
e-mail, postings around campus, announcements in residence hall meetings or at
other gatherings.

Alcohol Policy

Mary Baldwin College students and their guests are expected to comply with the laws of
the Commonwealth of Virginia. A summary of those laws is listed here to help you
understand the consequences of breaking the laws.

• No person under the age of 21 years may purchase or possess alcohol
  Penalty: Up to 12 months in jail and fines up to $2,500
• No drinking in public and no open containers of alcohol in public
  Penalty: Fines up to $250
• No possession, use, sale, or manufacture of false identification cards
  Penalty: Fines up to $500 and loss of driver’s license for up to one year
• Driving while intoxicated
  Penalty: Loss of driver’s license up to 3 years, and fines up to $2500
• Driving after having consumed alcohol while underage
  Penalty: Loss of driver’s license for 6 months and up to $500

In addition to the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, any use of alcohol that results in behavior that interferes with the learning process, living conditions, or social life of other students is a violation of our community standards and subject to review by the Judicial Board. Such behaviors include, but are not limited to: excessive noise, parties in public areas, vandalism, disruptive guests, activities focused around alcohol (e.g. ‘Around the World’ parties), and endangering others.

If a student shows a pattern of alcohol use/abuse that results in personal injury, excessive class absences, and/or multiple appearances before the Judicial Board, that student will be referred to Health and Counseling Services for mandatory participation in an alcohol abuse program.

Consumption of Alcoholic Beverages at MBC

With permission from Student Life, alcoholic beverages may be served at social gatherings on campus. To purchase or consume alcohol on campus, one must be 21 years of age and show two forms of identification: a college ID badge and another form.

Students and guests of legal age are permitted to purchase and consume alcohol in student rooms.

It is not permitted to consume alcoholic beverages in public places including residence hall corridors, elevators, stairwells, lounges, and campus grounds. Only unopened alcoholic beverages are permitted in public.

Keg parties, party balls, and any paraphernalia that aids in rapid consumption of alcohol (e.g. beer bongs) are not permitted.

Alcoholic beverages may not be purchased with collected (or hall) monies.

• When students of legal age serve alcohol, they must be responsible for their own and others’ consumption: Be sure to provide non-alcoholic beverages, as well.
• Serve food.
• Do not serve alcohol to intoxicated persons.
• Take car keys away from others who drink and do not have a designated driver.

Drug Policy

Mary Baldwin College upholds federal and state laws that prohibit possession, dispensing
and/or transferring narcotics (including marijuana). The college will not protect anyone
from legal prosecution.

Where specific evidence points to a person or group of persons involved in criminal
activity, a search can be conducted by legal authorities, who must have proper
documents in hand. Those officers may search any campus building without prior notice.

Where there is no concrete evidence of drug violation, the chairwoman of Judicial Board
will appoint two board members to investigate the person or persons involved.

If a violation is proved to have occurred, the Judicial Board will send a letter of record to
Student Life and may notify the student’s parents or guardians.

Any student having knowledge of another student’s violation of the drug policy,
should report it to any member of the Judicial Board or a residence advisor.

Sexual Assault Policy

Each of us has opportunity to help create a safe and secure environment in the way we behave and by knowing and observing good safety practices. Mary Baldwin College offers educational programs throughout the year, presented by Student Life.

The college also offers classes in fall and spring called Rape Aggression Defense System. The program offers realistic self defense tactics that include awareness, prevention, risk reduction/avoidance and hands-on defense training. Taught by certified RAD instructors, this program is the training of choice at many colleges and universities.

In the Event of Sexual Assault

Mary Baldwin College is committed to meeting the needs of sexual assault victims including honoring anonymity. Should an assault occur, a professional college staff member will be assigned to work with the victim to decide on legal action. That person will also assist with any necessary changes in academic program and/or living situation.
In the event of a sexual assault, a victim should take the following actions:

This information is published by law — and, because we believe that students, parents, faculty, staff, alumnae and visitors should be fully informed members of our community.

Statistics are kept in accordance with federal law based on the definitions used in the FBI’s uniform crime reporting system. In accordance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (the Clery Act, for short), colleges and universities must report and publish crime statistics. Included in the data are crimes on the main campus of Mary Baldwin College that were reported to, and investigated by, the campus security department or MBC officials with significant responsibility for student activities.
