On her second trip to Haiti, staff member Page Hearn was able to see past the seeming hopelessness to the joy among the faces of some of the world’s poorest, hungriest, and sickest people.

Starting Monday night, the new lounge will open in the Ham & Jam Pub inside Pannill Student Center. Coffee, snacks, and other light fare will be available from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday throughout the semester.

Associate Professor of Biology Lundy Pentz presents the first in a series of faculty essays about the Mary Baldwin 2012–13 theme, "Place." The writings are intended to deepen understanding of the theme throughout the campus community and serve as a precursor for the spring semester’s call for students to produce their own essays or creative works inspired by the theme.

  Artisans > Sept. 3–28
Artisans & Agroecology
An exhibition featuring a wide selection of work by 15 Virginia artisans will be on view at MBC’s Hunt Gallery from September 3 to 28. "Artisans & Agroecology: The Cultural Connection between Craft & Rural Life," is curated by artist, artisan, and teacher Joe Sheridan. Each of the artisans featured in the exhibition — including a custom leather artisan, blacksmith, woodworker, quilt maker, and potter — is connected with the Artisans Center of Virginia. The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and an opening reception is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Sept. 10.
