War with Iraq, 2003: Key votes in the British House of Commons

This webpage reports the outcome of three votes taken in the British House of Commons concerning war with Iraq.  In each case, substantial numbers of Prime Minister Blair's Labour Government deserted Blair and opposed his policy in support of the U.S. war plans toward Iraq.  However, in each vote very substantial majorities of both leading parties (Labour, Conservative) supported Blair and the war on Iraq.

1. March 18, 2003: Amendment in opposition to proposed Government motion favoring use of "all means necessary" against Iraq:

2. March 18, 2003: A government motion authorizing "all means necessary" for disarming Iraq was then passed by 412 votes to 149.


3. Earlier, in late February, a similar result was produced when Labour rebels attempted to use the issues of pending war with Iraq to embarrass the Government:
