The Reagan Doctrine

Reasserting American global influence in the 1980s


Goals:

-reverse Soviet advances in Third World

-raise costs borne by USSR of continuing to pursue expansionism

-avoidance of direct US - USSR conventional military confrontation

Means:

-renewed reliance on covert operations

-aid to anti-communist guerrilla armies

-coordination of policy with allied anti-communist states (e.g., Saudi Arabia, Pakistan) and non-allied but anti-Soviet states (e.g., China)

-increased military aid to anti-Soviet allies

Foci:

-Afghanistan

-Cambodia

-Soviet-allies in Africa: Angola, Mozambique, and others

-Central America, especially Nicaragua and El Salvador
