MBC’s innovative liberal arts and sciences education for the 21st century is the perfect preparation for satisfying careers in almost every field imaginable. This Gateway helps students focus on their talents, interests, and abilities; find the right major; and translate their education into a lifetime of inspiring work. Students have the opportunity to interact in classroom and in one-on-one settings with successful MBC alumnae.
The Career Academy is open to all freshmen in the Residential College for Women regardless of major. This program is tailored to meet individual needs and interests and to foster leadership development.
As part of your academic schedule you will enroll in the following courses:
There is also an emphasis on learning outside the classroom. A variety of required and optional presentations related to personal and career development are available for program participants.
You will be assigned to Spencer Residence Hall or Woodson Residence Hall where you will meet other students involved in the Career Academy and other programs. Commuter students are welcome, as well.
The Career Academy is directed by Julie Chappell, Director of Career Development Services. Julie is an expert in career development and will serve as your mentor upon your arrival at MBC. You will also work with a faculty advisor to assist in course selection, registration, and development of a four-year academic plan.
You may choose to continue with the Career Academy after your first year. The program is designed to provide the services and resources that will best meet your needs over your four years at MBC. As a sophomore, you may serve as a peer mentor to freshmen entering the career Academy. During junior and senior years you will focus on finalizing your credentials and preparing for graduation.
Participation in the MBC Career Academy promotes empowerment with knowledge, skills, tools, and resources to successfully transition to life beyond Mary Baldwin College. Active involvement in Career Academy will assist you in making important decisions that can direct your career and life planning. Upon successful completion of the program you will have the knowledge and skills to enter a career field of choice or pursue a graduate degree. Successful completion will be acknowledged during an awards ceremony.
