Description of Collection Review Project

Grafton Library Collection Policy

Over the course of the 2010-2011 academic year, the librarians at Grafton will be conducting a systematic collection review. Criteria used to determine the suitability of deselecting reference materials from the library collection:

  • Significance/Comprehensiveness of the publication.
  • Age and currency of the publication.
  • Availability of more recent editions.
  • Physical condition of the publication.
  • Duplication of content in more recent works.
  • Material not in electronic format
  • Projected frequency of future use.
  • Language of publication.
  • Listed/not listed in Resources for College Libraries.

Criteria to be used to determine the suitability of deselecting general materials:

  • The importance of the work: its inclusion in standard subject and comprehensive bibliographies or rare book lists.
  • The appropriateness of the subject matter to the curriculum.
  • The quantity and recency of patron use.
  • Interlibrary loan use.
  • The physical condition of the publication.
  • Number of copies in the collection.
  • Language of the publication.
  • Newer editions in the collection.
  • Listed/not listed in Resources for College Libraries.

Those books that are eventually withdrawn will:

1) be sent to our partners at Better World Books. As a quick reminder, BWB will attempt to: sell the items for us and we will receive a percentage of the sale; donate to our selected non-profit, Room to Read; or recycle the books.

2) Those that aren't accepted by Better World Books will be offered to the MBC community.

3) Those that remain will be recycled.
