Francine Prose, author of 14 books of fiction including Household Saints and A Changed Man, will be the speaker for the college’s Elizabeth Kirkpatrick Doenges Visiting Artist/Scholar Lecture. The event begins at 4 p.m. January 15 in Francis Auditorium and is free and open to the public.
Prose, a Brooklyn native and graduate of Radcliffe College, left Harvard graduate school to live in India for a year where she began to write her first novel, Judah the Pious. Upon her return home her book was bought at first sight and Prose was published at 26.
In addition to novels, Prose has penned stories, reviews, cultural criticisms, and essays appearing in such publications as The New Yorker, The New York Times, Atlantic Monthly, Art News, Elle, The Paris Review, Harpers Magazine, and The Wall Street Journal. She is also the author of several children’s books and three books of translation.
Prose is the recipient of numerous grants and awards, among them Guggenheim and Fulbright fellowships, and has taught at Harvard, the University of Arizona, and the University of Utah among others. Her novel Blue Angel was a finalist for the National Book Award and hen nonfiction work The Lives of the Muses: Nine Women and the Artists They Inspired was a national bestseller.
Prose will return to teach an English class, “Reading Like a Writer”, for Mary Baldwin’s May Term.
