Welcome from the Director
Welcome
to the Master of Arts in Teaching Program at Mary Baldwin College.
If you are in the teaching profession and wish to take your teaching
to a higher level, we are the program for you. If you are a career-changer
or a recent college graduate who wishes to earn a master's degree and
teacher certification, this program is for you. If you are looking
for a flexible program that allows you to work and attend school at
the same time, MAT is for you.
MAT at MBC is unique for three reasons. First, it is grounded in the
liberal arts. In an ever-changing global community, it is the liberal
arts that weave the common threads of the humanities, arts, sciences,
and mathematics throughout the diverse tapestry of our cultural differences.
Second, utilizing the inquiry method of learning, our faculty guide
students through their own educational journeys, facilitating a deep
understanding of old and new knowledge through a reflective process.
This bold approach to learning engages the students in ways that encourage
life-long learning.
Finally, every course is taught by Teaching Partners -- a practicing
K-12 classroom teacher and an MBC professor. This partnership helps
students learn how to apply new skills and knowledge to the classroom.
After many years as a teacher educator, I chose the MAT at Mary Baldwin
for yet another reason -- its impressive curriculum and faculty. It
is a pleasure to serve as the director of such a fine program that
has helped so many capable students take teaching to a higher level
for today's young students.
