MAJOR IN MUSIC
33–36 semester hours

- MUS 315 History of Western Music to 1700
- MUS 316 History of Western Music from 1700 to the Present
- MUS 400 Senior Seminar
- Emphasis requirements (see below)
Note: All music majors must pass the piano proficiency test (see piano department for details). Music majors are expected to attend on-campus recitals.
MUSIC LITERATURE AND HISTORY EMPHASIS
Required courses:
- All core requirements for the major in music
- At least two additional courses at the 300-level
- A minimum of two semesters of Applied Lessons
- MUS 106 Mary Baldwin College Choir or MUS 108 Chamber Music Ensembles (minimum of four semesters)
- MUS 402 Senior Thesis
MUSIC PERFORMANCE EMPHASIS
Required courses:
- All core requirements for the major in music
- A formal audition by the end of the sophomore year
- Applied Lessons on the primary instrument or voice for a minimum of six semesters
- MUS 401 Senior Recital
- Piano or voice concentration requirements (see below)
Note: MUS 301 Junior Recital is recommended for students who wish to pursue graduate study.
Piano concentration:
- MUS 106 Mary Baldwin College Choir (at least two semesters)
- MUS 210 Accompanying (at least one semester)
- MUS 323 Piano Literature
Voice concentration:
- MUS 106 Mary Baldwin College Choir (each semester after declaring the music major)
- MUS 141 Diction for Singers
- One year of a foreign language
Note: Students with an instrumental concentration should consult the department about specific requirements.
MINOR IN MUSIC
20-23 semester hours
- MUS 100 Introduction to Listening
- MUS 111 Music Theory I
- MUS 112 Music Theory II

GENERAL CONCENTRATION
- All core requirements for the minor in music
- At least two three-credit courses at the 200- or 300-level
- A minimum of four semesters of Applied Lessons, MUS 106 Mary Baldwin College Choir, and/or MUS 108 Chamber Music Ensembles
MUSIC LITERATURE CONCENTRATION
- All core requirements for the minor in music
- Four three-credit courses at the 200-or 300-level (two of these must be courses other than MUS 211, MUS 212, and MUS 217)
PERFORMANCE CONCENTRATION
- All core requirements for the minor in music
- A formal audition by spring semester of the sophomore year
- A minimum of six credit hours of Applied Lessons
- MUS 302 Minor Recital
- At least two additional three-credit courses at the 200- or 300-level
MUSIC EDUCATION (VOCAL/CHORAL PRE-K–12)
All students who wish to be licensed to teach music in the public schools, grades pre-K–12, must have a major in music (with a performance emphasis or music history and literature emphasis). In addition to emphasis requirements, they must complete the following:

- Minimum of one year of piano
- Minimum of one year of voice
- Minimum of six semesters of choir
