MBC Art Professor to exhibit New Work at Hunt Gallery

State License, work by MBC professor Jim SconyersThe exhibition,Jim Sconyers: Contingency, will be on view at Mary Baldwin College’s Hunt Gallery from January 19 – February 13, 2009. Jim Sconyers, assistant professor of art at Mary Baldwin since 2003, teaches all levels of photography and printmaking at the College. A mixed-media artist, his professional studio practice includes printmaking, photography, and digital media. In 2002 he received his MFA in Printmaking with Distinction from Indiana University’s Henry Radford School of Fine Arts, Bloomington, Indiana. Since then his work has been shown in a variety of venues in both solo and group shows. It has been selected for both national and international exhibition, including, in 2007,Rentas Sempadan: An International Print Exhibitionat the Penang International Art Festival in Malaysia and, in 2008,NO DANGER 3-Dimensional Airplane Prints, an international exhibition at Richmond International Airport, Richmond, Virginia, and at Robert L. Ringel Gallery, Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana.

Sconyers’ new series of mixed-media works on paper is making its debut at Hunt Gallery, and in 2010 this work will be shown in a solo exhibition at Main Art Gallery in Richmond, Virginia. Complex in design and fabrication, and simultaneously merging chance selections with stunning craftsmanship, this work incorporates aspects of printmaking, digital photography, painting, and sculpture. The artist states the following about the subject matter and structure of the work: “Cookies, a tin tea set, an instrument panel, a kitchen towel, a tomato seedling, a chocolate cake, and a clock – source material is captured from the domestic environment of the artist. Contingent patterns emerge from random assembly. A rigid formal structure secures a plane of tessellated, equilateral pyramids, the presence of which defies cold order with mesmerizing movement.”

A reception will be held for the artist on Monday, January 19, from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. in Hunt Gallery. The public is invited to attend. Hunt Gallery is dedicated to the exhibition of contemporary work in all media by regionally and nationally recognized artists. The Gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the College’s academic year. Hunt Gallery’s schedule for the 2008-09 academic year can be found online at http://www.mbc.edu/arts/huntgallery.php.
