Arts Exhibit: Artist Clover Archer to Exhibit New Work at Hunt Gallery

The exhibition, Every Little Thing: New Work by Archer pieceClover Archer, will be on view at Mary Baldwin College’s Hunt Gallery from February 7–25, 2011.

In her work, Clover Archer explores the complexity between perception and interpretation through various forms of media and emphasizes the arbitrariness and subjectivity of conceptual systems. Trained as a photographer, Archer says the following about her art: “By what methods and processes do we transform the moments that constitute our experience of temporal reality, into a coherent and meaningful narrative? My work reflects on this question, seeking to make visible the architecture that we create to order the world around and within us. Starting from visual materials that represent a disconnected image or aggregate of perceptions (found photographs, book pages torn from their original context, a collection of all of the numbers that I know, the text from Beckett’s Waiting for Godot), I set about constructing a system of association and connection. The resulting work is intended to emphasize both the arbitrariness and subjectivity of our conceptual systems. I do not intend for the viewer to understand every step of these associational systems, as my interest lies not in the system itself but in the process of their construction. Instead, my work aims provoke the viewer to replicate this process of meaning construction in their engagement with each piece.”

Archer lives near Lexington, Virginia. She received the MFA from New York University where she was a 1999–2000 fellowship recipient. Archer has exhibited nationally in solo and group exhibitions for fifteen years and has taught photography at the University of New Hampshire, New York University, and Washington and Lee University. She is currently the Director of Staniar Gallery at Washington and Lee University.

A reception will be held for the artist on Monday, February 7, from 4:30–6:00 p.m. in Hunt Gallery. The public is invited to attend.
