Campus Activity Signals the Start of the 2011–12 School Year
After a relatively quiet summer, the Mary Baldwin College campus is once again buzzing with the arrival of the first wave of new and returning students.
This week, freshmen in the Virginia Women’s Institute of Leadership (VWIL) arrived and quickly embarked on wilderness training and orientation, an annual camping and hiking expedition that tests teamwork skills and physical fitness. Student-athletes also return August 18, followed by the rest of the freshmen class, who will move in according to their first-year Gateways, August 21–23.
The theme for this year’s Week of Welcome is “Pearls of Wisdom.” On the schedule is karaoke in the Nuthouse, an ice cream social, a block party, entertainment from a comedic hypnotist, The Tempest at Blackfriars Playhouse, and more.
According to the most recent stats from the MBC Registrar’s Office, the college will welcome approximately 320 new students. Among these freshmen, 43 are members of VWIL and 27 are students in the Program for the Exceptionally Gifted (PEG). Twenty-one international students will arrive on campus this fall, including those enrolled in graduate programs.
