Good morning.

Commencement will be held on Page Terrace as scheduled this morning at 10 a.m.

In making the decision to hold the ceremony outdoors on campus despite the iffy weather, President Fox kept in mind the strong preference of the Class of 2013.

Family and friends attending today's ceremony should use their best judgment regarding rain gear. Since the grassy hillside could be slippery should it become wet, we encourage guests to wear appropriate footwear and as always exercise appropriate caution.

Congratulations to all those who will receive their degrees today, and deepest thanks to all the family and friends whose support helped them along the way.

The Value of Wisdom

Daniel Metraux hspace="20" vspace="20" align="right" />

Mary Baldwin College Professor of Asian Studies Daniel Métraux presents the second in a series of faculty essays about the Mary Baldwin 2011–12 theme, “Wisdom.” The writings are intended to deepen understanding of the theme throughout the campus community and serve as a precursor for the spring semester’s call for students to produce their own essays or creative works (painting, musical composition, monologue, etc.) inspired by the theme. Each of the four contributing faculty members, whose work will be published on MBC News in the coming months, represents each School of Excellence.

A fulfilling life is enhanced by a fruitful combination of wisdom and knowledge. Knowledge is an acquisition of the basic facts of life. Wisdom, which must be a foundation for knowledge, is the ability to apply what one has learned to achieve a more fulfilling life.
