Senior Sabrina Desper reached a milestone in her basketball career February 11, scoring her 1,000th point at Mary Baldwin College in a home-court win against Meredith College. This achievement puts Desper among the top 10, all-time leading scorers at MBC. She has also grabbed 569 rebounds while playing at MBC, which places her fifth in that category.
Each school was battling to compete in the post-season tournament in Saturday’s critical USA South contest. Mary Baldwin built a convincing lead in the first half when Desper drilled a three-point shot that put the Fighting Squirrels up by 13 points with 6:05 remaining in the half. After scoring six points, Meredith finished the half with four three-point shots and took the lead into the locker room, 37-35.
In the second half, the Avenging Angels continued to build their lead going up by eight with less than four minutes into the half. The Fighting Squirrels then began their own run, tying the game at 55. Desper then sank a jumper at the 10:56 mark that both gave her 1,001 points and Mary Baldwin College the lead. She was then fouled and sank the free throw to put MBC up 58-55. Although the game remained close, Mary Baldwin never gave up the lead and took the critical 89-87 win, securing the team a spot in the USA South Tournament.
Desper finished the day with 26 points and 13 rebounds while Meagan Barron ’15 also added 26 points and 11 rebounds. Shanice Miles ’14 scored 19 points and sank crucial free throws in the second half.

The USA South Conference named MBC’s Shanice Miles Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week. The Buckingham, Virginia, sophomore guard, playing in her first year of collegiate basketball, helped the Fighting Squirrels to a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition, by averaging 23.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 3.0 steals and 1.0 blocks per game. In a 78-69 win over N.C. Wesleyan, Miles tallied 28 points, six steals, five assists, three rebounds and two blocks. In an 89-87 win over Meredith, Miles totaled 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
The conference also named Sabrina Desper Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. The Stuarts Draft, Virginia, senior forward led the Fighting Squirrels to a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition, by averaging a double-double of 26.5 points and 14.5 rebounds to go along with 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game. In a 78-69 win over N.C. Wesleyan, Desper tallied her first double-double of the week with 27 points and 16 rebounds. She also added four steals and two assists in the victory. In an 89-87 win over Meredith, Desper notched her second double-double with 26 points and 13 rebounds. She also added four assists, two steals and one block in the victory.
