Having just received a trophy (pictured above, with cadets this week) for first place among all college marching units in the 2011 St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the Virginia Women’s Institute for Leadership (VWIL) is once again preparing to take part in what is considered the largest parade in the world . The award-winning marching unit departs Friday morning for the annual celebration in New York City, with the National Weather Service predicting a picture-perfect forecast for Manhattan: partly sunny and highs in the mid-60s.
For those who can’t make it to New York this weekend, the corps of cadets will be marching in the VWIL inaugural parade at noon on March 31 at the Physical Activities Center field. Also participating are alums of both VWIL and Staunton Military Academy. A barbecue picnic will immediately follow the parade for all participants, faculty, staff, and friends of the corps. The cost for the picnic is $5 per person.
