“Out of the Mouths of Babes”: MBC Theatre Presents The Children’s Hour
Mary Baldwin College Theatre presents The Children’s Hour by Lillian Hellman. Performances are May 9 through May 12 at 7:30 p.m., and May 13 at 2 p.m. in Fletcher Collins Theater, Deming Hall, Mary Baldwin College.
In this classic American drama, Karen Wright and Martha Dobie run a school for girls. When one of the students is punished for telling a lie, she starts a malicious rumor about the women. The rumor quickly turns to scandal as the girl harnesses her newfound power. The scandal leads to tragedy, and by the time the truth is discovered, it is too late. This powerful, serious play presents adult themes about the power of a lie.
“In an era when a malicious phrase on social media can have immediate and tragic consequences and students attempt to shape college courses through the power of Facebook, the danger of uncontrolled rumor in our education system has never been more present,” director Matt Davies said.
Since the play’s premier in 1934, it has enjoyed many revivals including last year’s West End production with Keira Knightley and Elisabeth Moss. The MBC production of The Children’s Hour features Danni Guy as Karen Wright and Savhanna Jones as Martha Dobie, the owners of Wright-Dobie school. Shane Sczepankowski appears as Karen’s fiance, Doctor Joseph Cardin. Mary Tilford, the girl who starts the rumor, is played by Rachel Berger. Mary is aided by Rosalie Wells, performed by Emilie Holmstock. Kate Given, Brittany Fauzer, Leslie Chockley, and McKinnon de Kuyper portray the other students, Peggy, Evelyn, Helen, and Lois respectively. Riley Steiner plays Mary’s grandmother, Mrs. Amelia Tilford, with Aubrey Joyner as Agatha, the Tilford maid. The cast is completed by Linnea Barklund as Martha’s actress aunt, Mrs. Lily Mortar.
