The Changing Shape of MFA

Master of Fine Arts students at Mary Baldwin College have formed Roving Shakespeare, a new company in which they will hone skills in several areas and in the process make themselves more marketable after graduation. We spent a couple of days with the students as they put the finishing touches on their first major project, a devised show — similar to a performance art piece — that incorporates the use of the Masonic Building and other Staunton landmarks and inspired by the themes of five Renaissance plays they’ll be performing throughout the year. The interdisciplinary nature of the new company model means actors are building props, set builders are creating promotional materials, and everyone’s getting a taste of what is takes to produce a show.
