Flamenco Concert at MBC

Mary Baldwin College continues its celebration of Latino/Hispanic Heritage month with the sights and sounds of the colorful flamenco. At 7:30 p.m. on October 12, the exciting flamenco fusion band Toma Que Toma will take the stage with a lively and entertaining performance of music and dance that will be fun for the whole family.

Toma Que Toma, based in Charlottesville, combines the virtuosic old-world intensity of flamenco with the danceable exuberance of the Gipsy Kings and the genre-bending rhythms of Spanish flamenco stadium rockers. The band’s classically trained musicians and dancers layer jazz, blues, and Brazilian flavors with the complex rhythms, mournful melodies, and flamboyant costumes of traditional flamenco. Toma Que Toma features many well-known area performers, including singer Madeline Holly Sales and guitarist Humberto Sales of the popular band Beleza. Also in the group are percussionist Jorge Carrizosa, guitarist Peter Richardson, and dancers Kristi O’Brien, Tracy Verkerke, and Kristen Eberly. The performance is in Francis Auditorium, in the Pearce Science Center on the Mary Baldwin College campus. Admission is free.
