###
Just as you turn in for the night you see the first snow flakes falling to the ground. You wake to the sound of sanding trucks and snowplows. Your first coherent thought: Do I have classes or work at Mary Baldwin College today?
Before images of cuddling up with a book or braving the wintry weather to build a snowman become a reality, there are a few places you can check to find out if the college is closed or running as usual.
Voicemail. If the college is closed or has a delayed opening, a broadcast voicemail will be sent to all faculty, staff, and students with active MBC voicemail accounts. In situations when conditions are questionable and the college remains open a voicemail will usually be sent, too. This is a critical reason why MBC students should activate their voicemail accounts. Voicemail can be accessed from off campus by dialing 887-7200 and following the prompts for “if you have a mailbox in this system.”
Media.Several local radio and television stations will be notified if the college is closed. In Staunton and the surrounding area television stations WHSV Channel 3 and WVIR Channel 29, and radio channels 94.3 FM/ 1240 AM, 90.7 FM, and 95.5 FM are some of the media that will carry Mary Baldwin closings. For a complete listing, use the following link . www.mbc.edu/admin/weather_emergency.asp
Internet.Information will be posted on the Mary Baldwin home page in case of inclement weather. Check the site periodically for updates. In addition, an e-mail will be sent to all faculty, staff, and students with active MBC e-mail accounts. Your account can be viewed from off campus at https://mail.mbc.edu.
Phone. If you are not able to obtain the information you need through any other channel, the College switchboard can be contacted about school closings. This method should be used as a last resort as the phone lines become tied up on a bad weather day.
A power outage, loss of heat, or an inability to clear parking lots and necessary paths on campus warrant closing the college, but each situation is evaluated separately. Conditions can vary widely between your front door and the campus, and best judgment should always be used when dealing with inclement weather. If you feel that you cannot make it to campus safely, a phone call to your professors or supervisor is suggested. A memo detailing employees’ responsibility during inclement weather is located at www.mbc.edu/docs/admin_docs/Weather_Policy.pdf.
It is important to realize that paths to campus buildings are cleared on a priority basis, meaning your favorite route to a building may not be available. A map of the priority system used to clear paths is available on the final page of the snow maps document at www.mbc.edu/docs/admin_docs/SNOWMaps.pdf.
