Students Earn Academic Accolades

Awards such as the Ulysse Desportes Award for Outstanding Achievement in Studio Art, the Benn Creative Writing award, and the Hohn Family Endowment for Foreign Study may not be household names, but at Mary Baldwin College, they are some of the coveted awards that honor the college’s brightest and most dedicated students that were bestowed March 24 at Honors Convocation.

Mary Baldwin’s annual Honors Convocation gives the college a chance to recognize the outstanding work by many of its students. Hundreds of students were lauded this year for making the Dean’s and Honors lists for grade point averages (GPAs) of 3.5 to 3.74, and 3.75 and above, respectively. Dozens of those who have maintained high GPAs during their college careers were noted for belonging to the elite groups of Honor Scholars and Bailey Scholars. Several students were tapped for membership in Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest and most respected honor society, and students who were inducted into the freshmen honor society Alpha Lambda Delta were also recognized. Dozens were congratulated for their appearance in Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. Ten students received the Adult Degree Program Loyalty Fund Scholarship.

Each department at Mary Baldwin also grants awards relating to its subject – many named in honor of influential professors and students in the college’s history. Nearly two dozen individual awards – a surprise for the recipients – were given to students who excel in specific academic areas. The Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges Ethics Bowl team, which was one of four finalists out of 16 colleges, was also recognized.
