Do you remember or ever wonder about “growing up Catholic?” Do you know how to “tackle that temptation with a time-step?” Do you wish you did? Ever lose your memory after having been struck on the head by a crucifix? Then, the Mary Baldwin College Theatre’s production ofNunsenseby Dan Goggin is the show for you. The musical, which features the perfect recipe of singing, dancing, holiness, and botulism opens October 1, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. in Fletcher Collins Theatre and runs through to October 5.

Originally a 1985 Off-Broadway sensation,Nunsensepresents the unfortunate story of five nuns from the Little Sisters of Hoboken who are trying to raise enough money to bury the remains of four sisters who met an untimely demise from their cook’s (Sister Julia- Child of God’s) lethal Vichyssoise soup. The show features multiple musical numbers and sketches all presented with a great sense of tongue-in-cheek fun. It should appeal to anyone who is in need of some lighthearted entertainment.

“Mary Baldwin College Theatre is dedicated to variety in the shows we do. We like the serious pieces and have done our share recently, but just as important is quality lighter fare. Especially in hard times, there’s often nothing better than a group of funny, hyperactive, slightly risqué, singing and dancing nuns,” said Director Clinton Johnston, assistant professor of theatre.

The high-energy comedy boasts a dynamic cast of both seasoned and new actors to the Mary Baldwin stage. Junior Katelyn Scott will play the part of The Very Reverend Mother Sister Mary Regina. Sister Mary Hubert will be played by senior Ariel Howard. Sophomore Miranda Hynes appears as Sister Mary Robert Anne. Miranda Uphoff, a junior, takes the part of Sister Mary Amnesia, and freshman Anna Ferrandino plays the role of novice, Sister Mary Leo.

The 2008-09 season also includes the showsCommunicating Doorsby Ayckbourn,Countess Maritzaby Emmerich Kálmán, Medea by Euripides and Lights Up!, a new playwrights’ festival of one-acts.
